How we got Started...

This project was named because of the many thank you notes that were received from soldiers that were recipients of the cookies.  Almost all the notes & letters seemed to always mention how much they enjoyed receiving something tasty from home, thus our project was dubbed "A Taste From Home."

In 2008 our troop, #1888, had collected donations of Girl Scout (GS) cookies to send to military troops overseas. Then we found we had no way to ship them. Lucky for us folks at Fort Gillem's 335th offered a transportation. Word got out and troop #1888 & #4244 collected what had been donated from 50+ other GS troops in the metro-Atlanta area. The result was shipping over 2,000 boxes of cookies to our soldiers in Iraq.

In 2009 troop #1888 & #4244 got started a little sooner. In April, thanks to almost 100 Girl Scout troops & Fort Gillem, over 6,000 boxes of cookies went to overseas soldiers in the Middle East.

In 2010 the "A Taste From Home" goal was 10,000 boxes. Due to the efforts of 100+ Girl Scout troops in the metro-Atlanta area & businesses matching Troop #1888 donations, the goal was exceeded by 800+ boxes! With the help of Fort McPherson & Dobbins Air Force Base, even more of our overseas military were able to have "A Taste From Home."

In 2011 a goal was not set. Troop #1888 & other troops had businesses match specific donation amounts.  The results of what troops #1888 & #4244 gathered up from 100+ metro-Atlanta troops came to 10,692 boxes of donated cookies.  In 2011, partially because of shipping costs, not all of the donated cookies went overseas.  We also wanted to be sure past & present military knew their service was appreciated.  So, about half of the cookies collected stayed here in the States.  Some of the stateside locations that received cookies included military stationed at Ft. Gillem, Ft. McPherson, Robbins AFB, and veteran's hospitals in Atlanta & Dublin, GA.

For 2012, we are hopeful that even more GS troops will get local small businesses to match their donations & even more GS troops will participate.  We are excited to have "connected" with someone that can not only arrange for girls to distribute cookies directly to military personel but will also ensure cookies are shipped overseas for free in 2012.

We hope you will take a look at different sections of our website.  If you are a scout, troop leader or business...we hope you'll sign up early to participate in the 2012 campaign.  If you have received some of our donated cookies, we hope you will leave a message on our "comments" page so participating Girl Scouts & businesses can see what you have to say.
